"So I'll just follow Justin up to the beach?" I asked.
"Yup. He'll take us to our favorite spot. Turn right here," Lance helped me," and just follow J the rest of the way."
"You know, I'm very sorry you guys. Something is definitely wrong with Justin today. He won't be much fun at the beach." JC explained.
"That's alright. No biggie" Ally answered. "Neither will Kayleigh." I glared at her in the rearview mirror and Lance shot me a questioning look from his seat shotgun.
"Why's that?"
I mouthed her answer as she said it, knowing what she would say word for word. She repeated the same thing every time we went to the beach. "She's never fun at the beach. She hates swimming, she's kind of afraid to swim in the Ocean."
Chris chuckled," Hey that's weird! Justin doesn't really like to swim in Oceans all too much either. He's afraid of sharks! He doesn't mind the beach though."
"We're here!" I screeched, changing the subject.
Parking, I climbed slowly out of the car. I kept my eyes on Justins parked car across the lot. For some reason, I couldn't seem to be able to take my eyes off him for even a second. At last, the door finally opened and out climbed Joey, who turned around and pulled out a basketball. I looked around, from a distance, to the drivers side of the car as Justin emerged.
He turned in my direction so I immediately set off towards the beach. The others who caught a ride with me already had a football out and were throwing it around. Not being a big fan of football, I decided to sit somewhere else to watch them. I walked past the three guys messing with the football, and sat further down the beach on a giant log.
"Yo, J, Joey!" Yelled Chris. "C'mon, come play some football with us!" He tossed the football to Ally who had ran right to them, never letting a good game pass.
Justin just ignored them and started walking toward me. I shivered as he got closer, the air had a slight chill to it. Justin pulled his baby blue NC Tarheels sweatshirt off to reveal a colorless wifebeater. I stared in awe at how gorgeous he looked. He was about to pass by me, but turned and tossed his sweatshirt at me.
"You looked cold." He grumbled and started walking again.
I couldn't help but think why he was acting that way. At the moment, it didn't really matter to me, I was too busy looking at him. I studied his muscular arms as he strode carelessly away.
At that moment, I realized why I had felt so strange sitting next to him on the bench. With his looks and his voice, I had, well, begun to like him. I could, just then, feel the slight warmth of him in my heart. But it faded when I thought of how he'd been acting.
I decided to follow Justin.
I got up from my log, Justin's sweater wrapped tightly around my waist, and walked quietly his way. I couldn't see him at first so I picked up my pace a bit. A few seconds later, I could see him. He was bent over, kneeling, looking at something in the sand. I looked back over my shoulder to see the others laughing, but no one was near. I had followed Justin far from where we should have been. Don't panic I thought to myself. It's not like you're lost and alone. No, you're lost and with him!
I acted calm and very quietly tip-toed over to him. He hadn't heard my yet, and was still bent over, so I couldn't see what he was doing. As I got closer, I could hear him mumbling something. I walked quietly behind him and kneeled down. He was repeating the word "why" over and over. I kept inching forward, when I realized he was shaking slightly.
"Justin, are you alright?" I asked him. He jumped and fell on the ground in the direction he was looking. He turned and sat up, his face red with anger.
"What the hell? Why did you scare me like that? Why did you sneak up on me? Why did you follow me?!?"He screamed in my face.
I was so shocked I sat down across from him. "I...I...I don..don't know." This time I wasn't staring at him. I was looking at the ground and could feel his eyes as he studied me.
"Mind your own business," he muttered as he got up, shaking sand off of his clothes.
"Justin!" I screeched, talking to his back as he stormed away in the direction of our friends," What is going on? Talk to me! What is wrong? What did I do to you?"
He turned quickly," N..Nothing!" he spat out," It's nothing, just leave me alone! It's none of your concern, just don't talk to me!"
I felt my eyes burn with tears as he turned again and whispered," I'm sorry about what happened in the theater. Just forget about it."
I managed to stand up then, shaking from head to toe. It was then that I let the tears flow. I couldnt' stop them. He was already out of sight, and I realized I was very cold. I unwrapped his sweatshirt from my waist and pulled it over my head. Once I was comfortable, I jogged in the direction of my car. Soon, I could hear voices, and recognized one of them as Ally. She was screaming for JC to stop, and JC responded with a laugh.
"Someone pin her down! I can't tickle her while she thrashes around you guys! I may be talented but.."
"Oh shut up JC!" Joey said sarcastically.
They all stopped when they saw me. It must've been quite a sight! My face was tear streaked, and they were still flowing freely. My eyes must have been blood shot, I was out of breath, and lastly, I was wearing Justin's sweatshirt.
Ally got to her feet in an instant as JC ran over to me and wrapped his big arms around my trembling body.
"What's wrong Kay? What happened?" Ally asked with strong concern in her voice.
Realizing who's sweatshirt I had on, everyone turned to Justin, who sat on a bench across from us. His head was lowered to the ground, as they glared at him questioningly. I gasped between sobs and gazed over at Justin.
"Would you like me to talk to him for you?" JC whispered sweetly in my ear.
"Yes...no...wait.." I mutter between breaths, " I don't know what you'll talk about, but can you send Lance or someone to do it?"I replied through my tears, I wanted JC to stay and comfort me, not leave.
"Sure, just sit down right here..I'll be right back. Promise."
I sat down on the warm sand, trying to get warmer In Justin's over sized baby blue sweatshirt. I was so confused as I watched him, this new guy, who I didn't even know, who at the moment, I believed I was falling in love with, being questioned. He was just sitting there, rocking back and forth, shaking his head or nodding once in a while. He looked cold in his wife beater, but I couldn't help thinking he looked great. JC ran up and sat down next to me, wrapping his arms around me once again. " Do you want to talk about what happened?" He whispered gently to me. I shook my head no, but he didn't understand that I couldn't explain what happened. I had not the slightest idea what was wrong with Justin. I knew I was shaking more than I thought when JC asked if I was still cold.
"I'm sorry--" I started, but Lance was heading our way.
"He didn't really say anything. Do you know what's going on?" Lance questioned. I shook my head, still in JC's arms," Well anyway, he wasn't talking at first." Lance continued," Then he muttered something about his girlfriend. Something like 'no, I love Tara..I dont know. Everyone's confused, even he seems really messed up..."
Ally strolled over right then. "I think Justin wants to talk to you Kayleigh."
I looked over at Justin, Chris, and Joey. Chris and Joey were staring our way.
"No" JC replied bluntly," We're leaving...she's had enough today. We all have. We'll talk tomorrow." As if reading my mine, he adds," I gave Ally our numbers, and she gave us yours."
I smiled, my tears were coming slower. Lance and JC helped me up. Ally put her arm around my shoulder as we walked towards my car. JC and Lance started towards Justin's car. I looked towards the ground as we walked, and realized I was still wearing his sweatshirt. I took it off, when Ally realized what I was doing. She looked at me like I was stupid. "Just keep it till later. You don't want to talk to him now, he'll bite your head off."
She tried to add humor to make me smile. Justin Chris and Joey were heading to the parking lot behind us, so I decided I'd just stick it out in front of him as he walked by. I turned and watched them coming towards us.
After all that had happened, I still couldn't keep my eyes off Justin! I could've smacked myself, but I was drawn to him. I studied him carefully. His curly locks, his face, down to his powerful arms, and his stomach. Amazingly enough, I realized that you could tell through his shirt that he had to have done many sit ups to get that form. I looked back up to his face only to realize he was just a few feet away from me. I looked right into his deep eyes and my knees went weak. I'm falling for someone who absolutely hates me I thought to myself.
At that moment, I stuck his Carolina sweatshirt our in front of him. As he reached for it, I turned to leave, but felt his other hand grab my wrist. He pulled me up close and tossed his sweatshirt to Chris. He then slowly wrapped his arms around me and held me tightly to him. My heart was racing a million miles an hour. He bent over and whispered in a choked voice, " I'm so sorry, I'll explain later."
I sighed in response, praying he would never let go. But of course it just wasn't my day, and he let go and walked away. I smiled inwardly, but there was no trace of happiness on my face. I still wasn't satisfied with this new guy named Justin. Not yet anyway.
